Design Challenge: New Tunnel Mechanic

To keep the experience fresh and to expand strategic depth, we introduced a “Tunnel Mechanic” a gameplay element where arrows can travel through linked pathways that behave differently from standard grid movement. This added a fresh layer of planning, forcing players to think in three dimensions and coordinate across linked paths.

As a core contributor on Arrow Out, I led the design and integration of the new Tunnel Mechanic and significantly shaped the player progression:

  • Developed dozens of handcrafted levels incorporating tunnel routes that balanced puzzle complexity and player discovery.

  • Created early tutorial levels that introduced the tunnel concept progressively, ensuring players understood the mechanic before facing deep strategic usage.

  • Reworked numerous levels to calibrate tunnel interactions so they contributed meaningfully to challenge without blocking progression.
